IMG_2193Using our sewing skills to provide assistance to others is a primary goal of the Chicago Chapter. Members are encouraged to take part in projects which benefit those in need without any anticipation of financial gain. Organizations such as hospitals, nursing homes, welfare groups, schools, armed service units, and facilities for the disabled are among those that benefit from our Community Service participation.

For more information or questions about Community Service projects contact communityservice@asgchicago.org

Previous ASG Chapter community service projects included making tote bags for WINGS, chemo caps and port cover pillows, and stuffed animals to comfort children in stressful situations.
For other community service ideas, see the American Sewing Guild website at https://www.asg.org/resources/giving-back.

2026 Chapter-wide Service Project: Port Pillows for Lemons of Love
By Jane Plass
Lemons of Love is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focusing on supporting cancer patients. It delivers care packages to hospitals and oncology centers, provides personalized care packages for individuals with a donation, and offers free programs for anyone impacted by cancer at its location in Mount Prospect, IL.
Lemons of Love can use all the port pillows we can make, so we are continuing this project in 2026. Its preferred port pillow pattern can be downloaded here. While you can use any solid or print fabric, Lemons of Love especially appreciates port pillows made with lemon print fabrics, as well as those made with masculine-themed fabric.
For those of you who knit as well as sew, Lemons of Love also welcomes handmade knit hats for its care packages. Please use soft yarn and avoid bulky seams. We’ll collect items for Lemons of Love at our 2026 annual meeting/fashion show next fall.
